The Power of the Power Nap
Successful business owners everywhere agree that taking care of oneself is as high on to-do list as other things if they want to achieve great success. Tired of the lack of energy, the inability to focus, and the inability to be present people choose to make time to create good sleep habits or create time for the power nap.
One successful business owner learned about the power of the afternoon power nap from his own mentor stating in a recent interview:
-
“I know that in the afternoons I get sleepy every day so I make sure that I set aside time for my power nap in the afternoon. I got that idea, it is kind of funny, when I use to work for what’s now the Government Accountability of the Federal Government. I got the opportunity to shadow the gentleman who ran the place that’s called the Comptroller General. Every day he would close his office door for about an hour and made it crystal clear to all of his assistants he was not to be disturbed. Everybody was always curious about what was so critical for that one hour that he did. Well what I learned from working there with him and becoming friends with him that he’d go in there and take a nap. It made all the difference in the world for him to get the rest of his day done. But that’s what he decided works for him. I know that early afternoon if my day starts at 4:00 or 5:00 in the morning, by the time that sets in around 2:00 I’ve already done six hours. And I’ve already done all the heavy lifting intellectually for the work that I do. So that at that point I’m coasting to the finish line and that’s how I believe in my afternoon power naps.”
A 20, 45 or 60-minute power nap will help you re-energize from head to toe. This business owner recognized that he was sharpest in the mornings therefore he organized his schedule to ensure that his high priority tasks were accomplished in the mornings that way he was able to “coast” in the afternoons including getting his power nap in as well.
To the uber busy, a power nap seems like an unobtainable luxury. Where would one find the time? However, isn’t it the case that everything else works it way into your schedule? Try adding a power nap, add a private appointment to your public calendar, close your office door and close your eyes. Leah Stussy says “Life is too short to sleep on low thread-count sheets.” Not only will you gain energy, but you will also have treated yourself to the ultimate luxury! The power nap!
